Abstract

One of the ways to control DHF is by targeting larvae using natural chemicals. One of the natural chemicalsis the extraction of basil and starfruit leaves because they contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. These compounds have the power to kill Aedes aegypti larvae. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of starfruit leaf extract and basil leaf extract on the mortality of third instar Aedes aegypti larvae. This research was a pure experiment with Posttest Only Control Group design. The treatment group used 8% starfruit leaf extract and 8% basil leaf extract with 9 replications and the control group without any treatment. Data were collected and analyzed with alpha 5%. The results showed that 8% of basil leaf extract had greater killing power than 8% ofstarfruit leaf extract.Statistically, using 5% alpha, there was no difference. Starfruit leaf extract and basil with the concentration of 8% were found to be ineffective due to the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae < 90%. The mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae was not affected by water temperature and water pH. Suggestions for further research are to increase the effective concentration of starfruit leaf extract and basil leaf extract that are appropriate in killing Aedes aegypti larvae through preliminary tests as the basis for determining concentrations in experimental treatments.
